Windows 7 not waking up after sleeping?

I recently switched from a Macbook to an Asus UL80VT running Windows 7. The reason I did was that I was spending 85% of my time on the Windows virtual machine for may day to day business activities. My 13 year old was definitely happy I switched since he got my Macbook.

I cannot be happier with my ASUS UL80. My only beef was that if I wanted the dual video adapter, Win7 Home Premium was the only version that was available. I tend to reload the OS when I get a new Windows computer anyway, so for me this wasn't a huge issue.

Anyway, one quirk is that when my laptop goes to sleep or hibernate, either manually or automatically based on a power scheme, it does not power back up, and I have to do a hard reset (hold down the power button).

Upon searching around, I found the Windows 7 Forums had a post regarding this that worked.

Windows 7 has a command line utility called powercfg that allows you to query your power management system for issues among other things. You must be running with elevated privileges to run this utility.

As you will see from the logs shown, in my particular case, a USB mass storage devices wasn't suspending properly so the computer never completely went to sleep. So we need to disable the USB suspend settings. Here is the process...

1. Click on the Start button and type cmd.exe in the search box.
2. Right click on the CMD icon and select "Run as Administrator"
3. From the command prompt type "powercfg -energy" (without the quotes)
4. Note the path that the file energy-report.html is in (or you can right click and Mark and highlight)
5. Enter the path into your web browser (or paste if you marked it in the previous step.
6. If you scroll down to see "USB Suspend:USB Device not Entering Suspend" then continue.

7. Click on the Start Button and "enter power plan" into the search button and then run it by clicking on the icon listed
8. Click on Advanced Power Settings
9. Select your active power settings and change USB selective suspend settings to Disabled (see screenshot), then click Apply.

10. Repeat #9 for each power setting that you use
